A worthy faith

Maybe you have struggled with the idea of God, the stories of Jesus, and the experience of living the Christian faith. Perhaps you’ve had a painful experience or found intellectual challenges that caused you to move on or move past religious claims. But there remains a longing in your heart that cries out for purpose and peace.

A credible, meaningful faith is one that welcomes difficult questions, holds up under intense examination, and answers the deepest longings of our heart. It also includes room for doubt, unanswered questions, and disagreement.

Worthy Faith #1:
A Faith Worthy of our questions

Questions and doubts are not opposite faith…they are part of a life of faith. But questions and doubts can either drive us to or drive us away from exploring the Christian story. In this first lesson, I will share why I believe in “a faith worthy of our questions.”

Worthy Faith #2:
A Faith Worthy of our longings

Is this all there is? If we look around, we will see that people are discontent. Something is amiss. We long for peace, hope, and contentment. But we can't simply wish them into existence; our longings must also be real, meaningful, true, and just. In this second lesson, I will share why I believe in a faith that satisfies the deepest longings of our heart.

Worthy Faith #3:
A Faith Worthy of our examination

“Proof” is the wrong word. We don’t “prove” there is beauty in the artwork or that our spouse is in love with us. But we know it—and it is true and very real. Is it reasonable to believe in God and in the Christian story? In this lesson, we look at clues in nature, in people, and in the story itself that has given rise to faith all over the world.

Worthy Faith #4:
A Faith Worthy of our Doubt

Doubt is something we all experience, but seldom do we know what to do with it. The Bible welcomes doubt and doubters, and so should the church. In this final lesson introducing doubters to the Christian faith, I seek to encourage the church to be a healing hospital with room for questioning and growth. Rather than seeing doubt as a barrier to entry, see church as the place for doubters to share, discover, and question together.
